Boys Hockey Melee

It is because of skillful plays like this one that my coaches decided I was really cut out to be a goalie. While chasing the puck I tripped over another player's stick, and my own, along with a few other players' sticks all at the same time. I tried with all my strength to free my stick but in spite of having mighty little Otter muscles I couldn't lift it at all. In hindsight I can see that kneeling on my stick while trying to lift it may have been part of the problem. My mighty little Otter muscles weren't enough to overcome my own mighty little Otter weight. Now I know.

In addition to having my own stick pinned, I had a lot of other player sticks pinned too. Each time any of those bigger boys tried to lift their stick they levered me up and made me fall again on all their sticks. Everyone tugged on sticks and tossed me about causing the tangle of hockey sticks to grow into quite a knot. The puck was somewhere under me too which only tempted other players to poke their sticks into the trap I had accidentally created. As new sticks got poked in, they too became consumed. It wasn't long before I had enough lumber under me that I could have started making a patio deck.

Eventually a referee blew his whistle and began the complicated process of untangling everyone from each other. He tugged on a few players and sticks, then stood back and knew exactly what to do. Long arms reached into the pile of bodies and hockey sticks to take hold of me. I was raised up and set aside, thoughtfully placed at safe distance from the pile where I couldn't cause any more tangles. I remained kneeling on the ice watching everyone else pick up sticks. The mystery of the disappeared puck was solved when someone noticed that I was still holding it. Finally the game could resume, and did as soon as I finished crawling my way back to the players' bench.

My coach said that even though I'm by far the smallest player out there I'm the best at falling on pucks and sticks and bringing the game to a halt. He said I should be a goalie since that's where my mighty little Otter hockey skills will do the most good.

He was right. I have become a good goalie, always alert and ready to fall on pucks and tangle up sticks. Any time I try any other positions on the ice I still take those good goalie skills out there with me too.
