Painting of a Boy Ice Fishing

painting of a little boy ice fishing

During winter my little sled can take me out to fishing spots in the middle of lakes that can only be reached by canoe during the rest of the year. The nice thing about ice fishing from my sled is that I can move around, fidget and even fall overboard without getting wet. That's something I always struggle with when I'm out in a canoe.

Ice fishing is a popular winter activity in Muskoka. It's most fun when the sun is shining and winds are calm. I sometimes catch perch, trout and pike. When there's no snow on the lake I'll bring my skates. Then I can skate all over the lake visiting other ice fishermen to see what they're catching.

Once the heavy winter snows arrive you need snowshoes or skis to travel around on the lake. Skiing or snowshoeing through deep snow takes a lot of effort! When the snow is too deep for me my favorite way to travel is to sit in my sled and let a big ice fisherman pull me out to my fishing hole. They say that pulling me is easy for them, since I'm smaller than a lake trout. I think that's why they call me "Small Fry".
