You very rarely see sledders at rest like this in the wild, but after hours of climbing hills a 5 minute break is sometimes necessary. During extremely cold weather hands get cold quickly! It's always a good idea to have an extra pair of mittens or gloves stuffed inside clothing. When the first pair gets cold and wet you can put on a warm dry pair and stuff the cold wet ones inside clothing so they might warm up and dry out a bit.
Bringing extra mittens is good planning, but I always forget to do it since I have so many other important things on my mind when getting prepared to go sledding. I have to think of which sled I'll use, the hills I'll head for, and what snacks to bring. I'm always experimenting with fists full of cookies and dry cereal to see which will hold up the best in my pockets during a day of sledding. It's a work in progress. So far the only thing I've figured out is how to make baby food in my pockets.
