A little park in a nearby small town had some nice ice sculptures on display for winter. The carvings were interesting but what specially caught my eye were the unusual ice formations within the blocks of carved ice. This block was perfectly clear and smooth with a honeycomb structure embedded throughout. I tried to learn more about how this might have happened and discovered that honeycomb ice like this can occur naturally...in a remote area in Antarctica! I'm sure the ice carver didn't get his ice from Antarctica, so I wonder how this interesting honeycomb pattern happened.
The bird in flight ice sculpture above is an example of one of the carvings. This one didn't have honeycomb in it but lots of interesting bubbles instead. The people who make ice sculptures can be very talented and creative, and when looking up close at how the ice was formed we see that nature can be very talented and creative too!
